Calling all Photographers (and wannabes!)

I posted this on my own blog, but I thought there might be some apron girls readers who are also photographers who might be interested... if you want to be included on my sidebar list, go over to my blog and let me know. If you just want to participate for fun, please do! I thought this sounded like a really fun idea!

One of my resolutions for 2010 (how do you guys say 2010 anyway... two thousand ten, or twenty ten? I must know SOON!) is to improve my photography and to continue learning and growing... I've kind of lost that drive to take photos of anything and everything (busy fall portrait season will do that to you) and I wanted to think of something that would keep me working throughout the year. I briefly considered 365 photos (a picture a day) but I KNOW it wouldn't happen, and it would end up being more stress than it's worth. Soooo.... I saw this somewhere, and I can't even remember where, so I can't credit it, but I would LOVE all of you photographers (or anyone with a camera) to join me!

My goal for the year: 52 Photowalks
And for the rules:
1. Go for a "walk" or drive, or whatever, once a week with the main purpose of taking photos. (Or bring your camera along on something you're already doing, or walk to your back yard... and it doesn't have to be exactly once a week, but roughly once a week.)
2. Take a photo, or two, or 200. Post your favorite, or two, or 200. Edit them if you wish. (I'll be editing mine... I like to practice that end of it too.)
3. That's it.

I know that the rules are really strict... but I think it will be a lot of fun anyway. ;) If you'd like to join me, let me know, and I'll link you on my sidebar. Then we can all look at each other's journeys throughout the year. Sound fun? Say yes!

I've Been Sewing!

My sewing machine has been humming again. I love that sound. I especially love the feeling that comes from creating something. Just in time for Christmas I finished two aprons to give away. A couple of days ago I put the final stitches on the aprons pictured above. Now that I have photographed them I can actually wear them. I'm so excited! The two aprons on the left were made from vintage fabric. Over the summer I collected pieces that caught my eye when I went thrift shopping. At the time I wasn't sure what I would make. I just knew I wanted to create something from the pieces. When I found my apron pattern I started gathering fabrics from my stash and it all came together. The cost of supplies for these two aprons was less than two dollars each. Does anyone remember embossed fabric? The straps on the red apron have little embossed flowers that have a velvet feel. The apron on the right was made from Amy Butler's Daisy Chain line. For the first time I decided to try something new. Often I see fabrics that I like but don't buy because they don't quite feel like me. Then I'll see someone else with a cute project made from the same fabric and wish I had just dared to step outside my comfort zone and try it. I bought this fabric about a year ago. I cannot tell you how many times I have taken it out of my fabric storage just to look at it. I have daydreamed about what it would become. I'm so happy with the results!

Great Find

I wanted to share with you this great find Santa brought to me (um, er, to my daughter) this year! I am in love and have had so much fun playing with my little one & this kitchen. Cooking, baking, putting dishes away, lining shelves (my own kitchen shelves are not lined!)...thanks Santa!

chile verde...yummy yum yum...

hola! there is a little mexican restaurant that only exists in cedar city and st. george, utah. unfortunately i live about 3 hrs. from cedar and a good 4 hrs. from st. george. it is calledpancho and lefty's and i literally crave their pork chile verde. it is also the only mexican restaurant that my dear sweet husband will walk into. damn the luck. so i decided the other day that i would try and recreate what they do so well and i ran across a recipe over here that is pretty darn close. i'll jot it down and you can try it if you like. it's a sunday dinner type of thing because it takes some time but it oh so worth it if you like a good chile verde.

pork chile verde

pork:
3 lb. pork loin cut into 1/2" chunks (i got 4.19 lbs and had the butcher cut into chunks for me which i then brought home and cut all the sinewy yuckiness out of and all the fat...after i got all that out it was about 3 lbs, i think.)
1 tbsp salt
1 1/2 tsp pepper
1 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp chili powder
1/4 tsp cumin
4 tbsp olive oil
2 1/2 c water

chile verde...green sauce
2 anaheim peppers, seeded and sliced or poblanos
1 1/2 lbs. tomatillos, cleaned and cut in two
1 lrg onion cut into 8 equal pieces
4 cloves fresh garlic, peeled
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1/4 tsp dry oregano
1/4 tsp sugar

Start by cutting your pork (if you didn't have your butcher do it, which you should because it's sooo much easier!) into 1/2" cubes and add to a large ziploc bag. quick tip: put your big ziploc freezer bag into some sort of bowl, i use my pyrex measuring cup, and pull it down over the sides. it's a good way to keep it upright while you have pork covered hands. add the salt, pepper, garlic powder, chili powder, cumin, water and olive oil to your bag. close the bag leaving a little bit of air in it and 'smoosh' it around to thoroughly mix the seasoning into the pork. set this aside to marinate for at least 30 minutes.

while your pork is marinating, peel the outer shell of the tomatillos and wash them to remove the sticky residue. cut them in half and slice the onion into 8 equal pieces. slice your chili's in half after seeding them. transfer your tomatillos, onion and chilis along with the 4 cloves of garlic into a baking dish and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 1-1:15 hrs. remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. add to a food processor or blender and add the salt, pepper, oregano, garlic powder and sugar. pulse to get it started and then blend it really well. set aside.

after your pork has marinated, add it and the marinade to a large deep skillet preheated to high. you will want a pan big enough to hold the pork and the sauce. a good way to know if your pan is hot enough is to add a few drops of olive oil and when it starts to smoke, it's ready. cook your pork on all sides, stirring often. this will take about 20 minutes. once the pork is cooked, stir in your sauce along with about 2 1/2 cups water. i did this differently...i put it all in my big crockpot and reduced the water to 1 1/4 cups. then i cooked it on high for about 4-5 hrs. taking the lid off the last hr. and stirring occasionally. if you don't want to use a crockpot then do this: bring all ingredients to a boil in the pot and reduce heat to the lowest possible setting and cover. your looking for a low simmer, it should barely even bubble. cook for about 1 1/2 hrs. stirring occasionally. you could also transfer your covered pot to a 300 degree oven and bake for about an hour. try a piece of meat and it should be tender when done.

now the recipe suggests that you use corn tortillas...we didn't. i spooned some of the chile verde into a flour tortilla then rolled it up and put it in the same baking dish i used for the veggies. then i spooned some of the sauce over the top, put some cheese on that and broiled for a minute or 2 until it melted. then we put sour cream, shredded lettuce and some avacado on top. so yummy!

i also made mexican rice and black beans and i'll put those recipes down too.

mexican rice

2 tbsp vegetable oil...i used olive 1 tbsp ground cumin
1 onion, chopped 1 c uncooked long or short grain rice
1 tsp minced garlic 1 3/4 c chicken broth
1 tsp chili powder 1/4 c tomato paste...i used tomato puree

preheat the oven to 350. heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. add the onion and garlic, cook and stir until onion is translucent. stir in the chili powder and cumin, and cook for about 30 seconds. add the rice, chicken broth and tomato paste and bring to a boil. transfer to a casserole dish and cover with aluminum foil or a lid. bake for 35-40 minutes, or until liquid has been absorbed and rice is tender.

black beans baby

1 16 oz can black beans...i used a big one 1 tbsp fresh cilantro...left this out because big d
1 small onion, chopped doesn't like it
1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
salt to taste

in a medium saucepan combine all ingredients except seasonings and bring to a boil. reduce heat to medium-low. season and simmer for 5 minutes.

well there you go....a mexican fiesta from mi casa to su casa.

Cookware Advice Needed

Hello, girls... this post is not as important as the New Year's Resolution one below, but I seriously need some quick advice...

Through our bank rewards program, we have enough points to 'purchase' one of several items. We really need some new pots and pans, as our current ones, which are Teflon, are breaking down after 13 years of use. We have enough points to get either Rachel Ray's 10-piece hard anodized cookware set with glass lids or a 12-piece Paula Deen porcelain enameled cookware set. (I have no idea what either of these descriptions mean.)

However, my husband is convinced we need Stainless Steel cookware...but I am only a decent cook and 1) we would have to save some $, because SS is not offered as an option to redeem our 'points', 2) I really think I would burn/scorch things using SS. (Hubby is a good cook, but I do most of the cooking anyway.)

I'm wondering about anybody's opinion with my dilemma... Pretty please?

New Year's Resolutions

I love a fresh new start... a chance to change some things about myself that really need changing, and I love a new year to give me a big reason to set those goals. I was thinking that I would LOVE to hear what other women are resolving to do for the new year, so I'm asking for posts on New Year's Resolutions. You don't have to share all of them, if they're personal, but we could all use some ideas, right? I'd also love to hear readers' resolutions in the comments! I'll be posting mine too... as soon as I sit down and decide what they officially are! :)

A First Time for Everything...

Tomorrow I'm cooking my first turkey. I'm a little intimidated by this giant, gross, uncooked bird. But momma is far away and we're on our own for Christmas dinner. Last year all I could muster up were a couple of baked chicken breasts. But this year I found turkey's on sale for $0.38 a pound... how could I not buy one at that price?

So turkey it is. Wish me luck. If you have any pearls of wisdom you'd like to share- you know, how to keep the turkey from being dry, how you season it, etc- I'm all ears!

Christmas Birthday Boy

My oldest son's birthday is on Christmas Day. However, we do 'friend' parties on the even years, and since he will be 10 this week, we'll have a party for his friends next week. Does anybody have any good ideas for games or activities for 10-year olds?

Christmas Tree Hot Pad

Need a last minute gift idea?  This hot pad is super easy to make.

(measures 6" x 7 1/2")

What you will need:
Fusible Web
6" x 7 1/2" Insul-Bright or batting
4" x 5" fabric for tree
7 1/2" x 9" fabric for front
6" x 7 1/2" fabric for back
basic sewing supplies

1.  Fuse web to the back of tree fabric.
2.  To cut the tree (4" wide x 5" tall) use your ruler to measure from the bottom left corner to the top center (two inches in from both sides).  Repeat on the right side.  From the scraps cut a trunk.  I cut mine 1" x 3/4".

3.  Peel off paper from the fusible web, center onto your top piece, overlapping the tree over the trunk just a little.  Press to bond the pieces together.  Applique around the tree and trunk.  Make sure you sew where the trunk and tree base meet.

4.  Layer your pieces.  Face the front piece upside down.  On top of it, center the Insul-Bright and back piece.  You can double the Insul-Bright if you want.

5.  If you want to sew around the tree or do any decorative quilting, carefully turn over, pin and quilt.  Otherwise, move on to the binding.
6.  Fold front piece back 1/4".  Fold again, overlapping the back piece.  Pin in place.

7.  To fold the corners, turn down at 90 degrees.

8.  Repeat step #6.  Do this for all sides.
9.  Stitch along folded edge of binding, make sure to back stitch at the beginning and end.

Voila, your done!

Christmas Brunch

I've never been one to cook much on Christmas. I have always done a fancy Christmas Eve dinner, but have figured on Christmas day everyone can kind of fend for themselves with leftovers and the box of cereal Santa leaves in everyone's sock.
But this year I have my in-laws coming to spend the day with us, and "fending for yourself" won't really work. So I tried out a recipe last night that we will definitely be using for Christmas day. It was super easy and can be put together the night before and just baked on Christmas day. My kids loved it, and I did too. (And it's not too killer on the calories!) So here's the recipe for you.
Raspberry French Toast with Custard Sauce

4 oz Neufchatel Cheese (1/3 less fat cream cheese)

1/2 c sugar

2 tsp vanilla

1 tsp ground cinnamon

2 eggs plus 2 egg whites

5 cups fat free milk divided

1 French Baguette, ends trimmed cut into 20 slices

1 pkg (12 oz) frozen unsweetened raspberries (I didn't use them all)

1 pkg (4 serving size) vanilla flavored instant pudding

First: Beat cream cheese sugar vanilla and cinnamon with electric mixer until well blended. Add eggs and egg whites one at a time mixing well after each addition. Gradually add 2 cups of milk, beating until well blended.

Second: Arrange the baguettes in a greased 9x13 baking dish (my baguette was really skinny and so all 20 pieces fit, if your is bigger you may not get quite as many pieces in it) Sprinkle the frozen raspberries on top. Pour cream cheese mix on the bread. Let stand for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350.

Third: Bake for 40 minutes or until golden brown. Meanwhile bring remaining 3 cups of milk just to a boil in a saucepan; gradually add the dry pudding, whisking well until blended. Remove from heat; let stand for 5 minutes.

To serve: Cut french toast into serving slices. Serve topped with the custard sauce and any extra raspberries you may have.

Sorry about the crappy pictures, maybe Santa will bring me a better camera!

To make this ahead of time assemble everything as directed. Cover and refrigerate several hours or overnight. When ready to serve, bake uncovered at 350 for 40-45 minutes, prepare custard sauce and serve as directed.

Felt Food

About a month ago, I discovered felt food and wanted to make some for my little boy for Christmas. There are millions of great ideas on the Internet, a few free tutorials, and lots of amazing foods and patterns for sale on etsy. Really cute ones! I did a LOT of looking around and picked out my favorite ones and attempted to make them. Some turned out better than others. I found a site with links to free tutorials here. I really enjoyed relearning some stitches I haven't done for awhile and trying new ones. I can now whip stitch, blanket stitch, and tie french knots. (Thanks to YouTube for some great How-to videos!) It look quite a bit of time, but I enjoyed it. While Black Friday shopping, I saw a huge bucket of plastic food for $4. Making handmade is better, right? Right? Because it sure would have been easier to buy that bucket. Anyway I am now completely ready for Christmas. How about everyone else?

PS- And how could I forget, our own Vanessa makes awesome food out of fabric and she shares tutorials, too!

Tassle-less Quilt Tie

I decided to make matching quilts for two of my boys LAST YEAR! I finished the blue one and it turned out GREAT!! Then I tied the red one. When I took it off the frame it look HORRIBLE, wrinkles and waves EVERYWHERE. So I shoved it in a closet and haven't touched it since. My sweet 6 year old came to me this year and said, "Mom for Christmas this year could you just finish my quilt?" That tore my heart in two! So I cut ALL the ties out and started it over.

I just love quilts tied this way and thought I'd share. And it helped take my mind off the fact that I was having to RE-DO this!!

1. Tie a knot in the end of your yarn, I used thick crochet thread.
2. About 2-3 inches away from where you want your actual tie, put your needle through JUST THE TOP LAYER. Snake your way through the batting and come up where you want the tie to be. Pull taught.3. Using your needle tug on the fabric where your knot is to make the hole a little bit bigger and then push the knot through. Pull on needle again until knot has settled inside.
4. Make the first half of your "X", going through all layers this time and coming up where you want to start the second line of the "X".5. Finish off this "X" by putting your needle through JUST THE TOP LAYER again. Between ties I had some distance to travel inside that batting layer. Just use your fingers to fish the needle to where it needs to be and come back out where the next tie needs to start.
6. Repeat as often as needed

7. To finish off: Instead of coming up where you want to start another "X", wiggle your way through some batting and come up a couple inches away from your last finished "X". Tie a knot close to the fabric.8. Using your needle tug on the fabric a little bit to make the hole a little bit bigger and push the knot through. Cut the string and push excess string into the hole as well.
There you have it! I like my "X's" to be imperfect. I like the random sizes and directions. You can be more precise if you'd prefer.
Here's the finished product. I LOVE how it turned out! {Those waves aren't from my poor skills, though said skills aren't proficient, they are just from me throwing the quilt on the floor quick for a picture°Ãœ°} I'm elated to have it DONE!

MAKE SOMEONE DINNER!!!

So I've mostly been M.I.A. for the last month or so and to the left here is the reason. Mindy mentioned that I had my new baby boy in early November and said I might get on here and share some details at some point. Henry John was born on November 4th and weighed 8 lbs 10 oz. I was able to go pain med-free this time again and we are all doing wonderfully.

The main reason for this posting isn't my darling little baby boy but to issue a challenge. We have had so many warm meals brought to us since Henry's arrival and it is incredible how helpful it is. I owe my sanity to it in fact. Just having that meal provided many times has allowed me to spend extra time with my kids that need me or my new baby or my husband. Since this blog is full of all of you wonderful, homey women. ...And since it is a season when it's nice to think of others, I want to urge everyone to take someone a meal!! Now or soon. Is someone pregnant? Someone in need? Who has been sick? Did someone you know just give birth? Whatever the reason!! Who could you take a meal to? It is so helpful, plus it's just nice to be thought of. So I issue you all a challenge to take someone dinner this month. Call them up and offer-and don't take NO for an answer. Cause they'll try to say no. Hope you are all well!

12 Daytz of Christmas

I came across this great idea for a simple homemade gift, The 12 Daytz of Christmas. The best part, it is a gift that keeps on giving.;) I am planning on sticking it in the husband's stocking. I will be changing a few of the ideas because I live out in the middle of NO WHERE. Hope you enjoy it too!
I forgot to note that all you have to do is save the pictures to your file and print them out, super easy!!

What Are You Making For Christmas This Year?

It's about this time of the year I always wonder why I decided to make so many of our Christmas presents. I always vow to either cut back or start earlier the next year, but I never seem to.

But I thought I would share some of my homemade projects to inspire you for next year, and I want to see what all of you are making to inspire me too!

I should feel not so stressed this year because I made a lot of these and gave them away already. They're a Christmas countdown, (you can't really see the numbers on the stars but they're there!) They were a $4 pizza pan from Walmart, and then I added the vinyl and made a matching magnet from a flat marble, and sprayed it all with glitter spray. They were very easy and people loved them.
I am making us a family Yahtzee game. I saw Felicia do this on her personal blog and I copied her idea. But basically you put a 6 pictures of your family on 6 dice and play Yahtzee with them. My baby, (who really isn't a baby anymore....) is getting these cute fabric "paper" dolls. I couldn't resist the fabric when I saw it in the store this summer. I have to make her a book/holder for her to take them all to church in too. This is turning out very nicely.
I've made a lot of aprons this year and this is the last one I have to finish. I even bought enough fabric to have left over of the cute cupcake one so I can have one too!And this is a good present for a girlfriend. I have another friend who LOVES Zachary Quinto, (Sylar from Heroes, Young Spock from the new Star Trek movie). And so I bought magnet sheets that can go through your printer and I made her some eye candy for her refrigerator. (And yes there's a sheet leftover for me to print out some Johnny Depp for me!)

I'm also knitting washcloths and making my kids superhero capes. If I feel really ambitious I might make my girls some pajamas for their knock-off American Girls, but really that might have to wait until the New Year!

I'm so excited to see what all of you are up to! Post away!

Beauty Product Help

I posted this on my own blog and thought it wouldn't hurt to post here also. What are your suggestions on good, inexpensive beauty products. Particularly a facial cleanser that can handle both dry and oily skin. A good deep clean. A moisturizer would also be helpful. And anything else you can think of while you're at it. I'm interested to know what you all use. I haven't been happy and satisfied for quite some time. I'm not willing to blow the budget in the process though. Natural remedies are welcomed also. Thanks ladies!

Mommy Time

Tuesday mornings are mommy time! Thank Heavens.

Table Talk

I found this cute idea on FamilyFun.com and adapted it just a little. It turned out fun for our Thanksgiving dinner conversation! A few weeks before the dinner, I asked everyone who would be attending some trivia questions about themselves, like name your favorite movie and book, what was the best part of 2009, what do you do in your free time, where would you like to travel, etc. Then I put all the answers for one question on a leaf cutout and did enough questions so there would be one per plate. During dinner, we guessed which answers belonged to which person. We had a wide range in ages but I think it was enjoyable for everyone! I thought this could be used for any holiday or dinner get-together.
