In Need of a Little TLC

Who didn't love the '70's? Is there any hope for this dresser? I'm wondering if I can just paint over the top (it could be lead-based paint) or do I have to strip it down? And then I could just add new knobs, right? And is there a special kind of paint I need? I'm thinking black... any advice would be appreciated!

You should have it tested for lead first. There are at home test kits or you can send a sample away. If it does have lead you can paint over it, but there is no guarantee some lead dust won't eventually sneak out. If you do strip it, it needs to be done by a professional. Good luck.

Here is my humble-very non-professional opinion. You should test it for lead paint, especially if you are using it for a child. If it is postive-chuck it! Not worth the time and $$ it will take to fix it. If not, then give it a good sanding, then prime with KILZ paint. This will keep the old color from coming through. Then do a top coat of whatever you want. I think I read on line once that if you are doing black, then a gray primer will make the final coat go a lot faster-a lot less coats. Also-I know this is getting long, but you asked:)-if you use the sponge roller instead of a paint brush, you will get a cleaner look, than a lot of brush marks. Can't wait to see it finished. Good luck!

Sha, you have no need to be humble, and your opinion is as professional as anyone's! (Really, you all should see the stuff she does... it's amazing!) If it doesn't have lead paint, I'm really excited to see how it turns out! I'm really trying to figure out what the original painters were thinking... ;)

there is a new behr paint at home depot that doesn't need primer and it really works. we just painted over gosh awful 70's orange on a store display cabinet and it worked like a charm. only 2 coats.

When I bought my house there was lead paint on the porch, the village required the sellers to paint over the lead and then it was up to code. You can paint it and it seals it, if you're worried about leaching, prime with Kilz, nothing gets by it. I've painted dressers like that, it's fun to give it a tune-up. I stenciled the face of the drawers on mine & changed out the pulls (a long time ago, that dresser died ages ago!). It's worth a little elbow grease to save some dough.

Have fun!

Assuming you test for lead and it's OK...spray paint it with primer, then your favorite color, and then mod podge some coordinating paper or fabric to the drawer fronts. Finally, add some cute drawer pulls.
