Apple cider vinegar with a few drops of soap. They like the vinegar but when they land they sink because of the soap. The house might be stinky for a couple days but they'll be gone. (I know from experience- rotten potato fell behind the fridge and wasn't found for a LOOOOOONG time)
Take a disposable plastic cup and put something sweet in the bottom of it. Like a piece of banana! Cover the cup with clear plastic wrap (Saran or the like) and tape it down or rubberband it so it's nice and tight. Poke several holes in plastic wrap top ... but keep them tiny. The fruit flies will fly in but they can't get out. I've had good luck with this method, plus you can see how many little pests you're collecting. It takes a while to get rid of all of them because their repro cycle is so short! Good luck!!
You can also do the "trap" that Valerie suggested with a funnel made out of a piece of paper. For some reason, they can't figure out how to get back through the hole in the funnel. It works like a charm...just be sure to pull the funnel out outside so the flies aren't right back in the kitchen! ;)
The apple cider vinegar works great! I live byu an orchard and we get them all the time. Poke a few holes in the lid of some tupperware and put some vinegar in the bottom of the container!
I use a bit of honey in the bottom of a mug - they love the sweet of the honey but get stuck. Works nicely and doesn't look too bizarre hanging out on the counter! Donna

I have heard that they won't stay near a sliced cucumber on a plate. You could at least discourage them. Not sure about a real pest control idea.

I've heard basil leaves, not sure if it works though.
